Big Ambitions Banking, Loans and Investments After 1.0
Banking is the system most changed by the 1.0 release, which means it is also the system where old guides are most likely to be actively wrong.
Negative Interest Is Gone
This is the headline. Hovgaard’s release announcement is unambiguous: “While negative interest is real, it’s not very common, and we decided it was time to get rid of it! It’s your money — use it how you’d like!”
If you find a guide explaining how to structure your holdings around negative interest, or advising you to keep cash out of the bank, it was written for Early Access and no longer applies. Sitting on a large balance no longer costs you anything.
Loans
Loans were rebalanced in both directions:
Harder:
- Higher income required to qualify
- Higher interest rates
- Higher minimum daily payments
Easier:
- Larger maximum loan available from Vantander Bank
- Partial payments are now allowed
The net effect is that loans became a tool for established operations rather than a way to bootstrap. If your income does not comfortably cover the higher minimum daily payment, the loan will squeeze you before your new store ramps. The upside is at the other end: an established company can borrow more than before, and can pay down flexibly rather than being locked into a fixed schedule.
Investments
The investment system got three changes:
- Daily auto-investing — set it once instead of clicking every day
- More detailed growth information so you can see how a position is actually performing
- Partial withdrawals without closing the entire account
That last one matters most in practice. Before, pulling money out for an opportunity meant liquidating the whole position; now the investment account can double as a working reserve.
Empire Bank and the Banking Apps
Players search for how to use the in-game banking specifically because there are several financial surfaces and they do different things — loans and investments through the bank, day-to-day balances and business finances through EconoView, and per-business figures through BizMan. If you are hunting for something specific:
- Loans and investment products live with the bank
- Ongoing expenses, theft losses and net income per business live in EconoView
- Per-business inventory, pricing and marketing links live in BizMan
- Taxes owed and next year’s estimate now appear in the EconoView panel too, as of 1.0
Should You Take a Loan?
Under the 1.0 rules, the useful test is the minimum daily payment rather than the interest rate. Ask whether your current net income covers that payment without the new business contributing anything, because the new business will not contribute for a while — fit-out, stock and staffing all land before revenue does.
Where borrowing does make sense post-1.0:
- Buying a building outright rather than leasing, once you have stable multi-store income
- Funding a factory, where the equipment bill is enormous but the production margin is durable — see the factory guide
- Bridging a known gap, since partial payments now let you overpay when a good month lands
Where it does not:
- Funding your first business. The income requirement alone makes this difficult now, and it was always the riskiest use.
Wealth Milestones
If you want targets, the achievement thresholds double as a progression ladder: bank balances of $100,000, $2,000,000 and $10,000,000, and personal wealth of $1,000,000, $10,000,000 and $100,000,000. Full list in achievements.
The tax side of holding that much money is covered in the taxes guide.
